Gryphon rugby women clobber Western

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons ran to a 73-0 victory over the Western Mustangs Friday night in OUA women’s rugby league play at Western’s Alumni Field.

Guelph’s speed and strength helped the Gryphs to a 39-0 lead at halftime.

Emmanuela Jada led the Gryphs with four tries while Alexandra Everett had three, Amara Hill had two and Emilie Nicholl, Emily Frasson, Rebecka Sundell and Mikaela MacDonald had one apiece. Julia Schell added four converts.

The win was Guelph’s second consecutive road victory as the first half of its four-game regular season was played away from the U of G campus.

The Gryphs have a pair of home games left on their regular season as they’re to host the York Lions Sept. 22 at 12 p.m. and the McMaster Marauders Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. Both games are to be played at Varsity Field.

The result also guarantees the Gryphs a spot in the top flight of the playoffs. Top four in the Shiels Division advance to the top-flight playoffs as do the top two in the Russell Division. Both divisions consist of five teams.

The Gryphs lead the Shiels Division at 2-0 and are followed by McMaster at 1-0, York and the Queen’s Gaels at 1-1 and Western at 0-3.
