Gryphon rugby women clout McMaster for openers

HAMILTON – The three-time defending champion Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA women’s rugby season by dumping the McMaster Marauders 49-12 at McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium Saturday.

The Gryphons scored the first 39 points of the game with 29 of those points coming in the first half.

McMaster was limited to a pair of tries six minutes apart midway through the second half.

Jasmine Ing led the Gryphs with two tries and two converts while Talia Hoffman also scored two tries including Guelph’s opening try of the season in the 10th minute. Getting one try apiece were Emily Frasson, Marissa Themeles, Nerine Hill, Natalie Armatage and Julia Schell.

Stacey Warner and Britni French each had a try for McMaster while Tia Svoboda kicked a convert.

Guelph and McMaster account for every league title since 2014. The Queen’s Gaels won in 2013 to put an end to a five-year grasp on the OUA pennant by the Gryphs.

Next league game for the Gryphs is a home match Sept. 14 against Queen’s. Game time at Varsity Field is 1 p.m.
