Gryphon rugby women downed by second-ranked Queen’s
GUELPH – The sixth-ranked Guelph Gryphons suffered their first setback of OUA women’s league play Saturday as they were defeated 31-3 by the second-ranked Queen’s Gaels at Varsity Field.
The Gaels remain undefeated at 3-0 with the win while the Gryphs fall to 2-1.

After scoring a try in the first 10 minutes of the match, Queen’s solidified its lead with a pair of tries two minutes apart late in the first half.
Guelph’s lone score came on a penalty kick by Kendra Cousineau with a minute to go in the opening half.
The Gaels led 19-3 at the break and added a pair of tries in the second half to complete the scoring.
Sophie de Goede led Queen’s with two tries and three converts while Maddy Kushner and Carmen Izyk had one try apiece. The other score was a penalty try with three minutes to play.
The loss was Guelph’s second of the year at home to the Gaels as Queen’s had won a preseason match 17-13 at Varsity Field Sept. 19.
Queen’s leads the Shiels Division while the Gryphs are second. They’re followed by the McMaster Marauders at 1-1 while the York Lions and Brock Badgers are tied at 0-2.
The Gryphs are to complete their regular season Saturday with a game against the Lions at York’s Alumni Field at 1 p.m. A win will secure a home game in the semifinals Oct. 30. The league final is set for Nov. 6.
