Gryphon rugby women face Victoria in national quarterfinals

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons are to start their quest of lifting the Monilex Trophy as U SPORTS women’s rugby champions Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Nixon Field on the Queen’s University campus in Kingston.

The OUA champion Gryphs are to take on the Canada West silver medalist Victoria Vikes in their quarterfinal match.

The Gryphs will be searching for their third national title as they previously won the tournament in 1998 at Hamilton and 2011 at Peterborough. Guelph won the OUA championship Saturday with a 32-23 victory over the Queen’s Gaels on Nixon Field.

Guelph enters the tournament with a 5-1 overall record in OUA play this year.

Victoria missed out on the 2019 tournament, but finished fifth in 2018 as they rebounded from a 54-10 loss to the Gryphs in the quarterfinals.

The Vikes are looking for their first national title.

Other teams in the tournament are the defending and Quebec champion Laval Rouge et Or, the Atlantic champion St. Francis Xavier X-Women, Canada West champion UBC Thunderbirds, Quebec silver medalist Ottawa Gee-Gees, Atlantic silver medalist Acadia Axewomen and Ontario silver medalist and host Queen’s.

StFX is to play Ottawa Wednesday at 11 a.m. while Laval and Acadia are to battle at 5 p.m. and UBC and Queen’s are to tangle at 7:30 p.m.

Laval’s championship win 2019 was its first while StFX has won the title six times and Ottawa has won it once, in 2017.

Universities represented in the tournament account for eight championship wins in the past 10 tournaments.
