Gryphon rugby women hammer Brock to complete regular season

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons wrapped up their OUA women’s rugby league’s regular season Saturday with a 53-5 victory over the Brock Badgers at Brock’s Alumni Field.

The win secured a bye in next weekend’s quarter-finals as the Gryphs will finish second in the Shiels Division at 3-1. The Queen’s Gaels will finish first at 4-0 and receive the other quarter-final bye.

Brock will finish at 1-3 and either third or fourth in the division depending on the result of a Sunday game between the McMaster Marauders and Western Mustangs. If McMaster wins that game, the Badgers finish fourth. Brock could finish third depending on the score of a Western win as the Badgers, Marauders and Mustangs would all finish with 1-3 records and the scores of their games against one another would determine the final positions.

Brock has is +31 in the difference between points scored and points allowed in its games with McMaster and Marauders. They lost by 24 to McMaster and won by 55 over Western. That means the Mustangs have to win Sunday’s game by 40 points or more to get into the playoffs.

Saturday, Talia Hoffman led the Gryphs as she scored two tries. Getting one try apiece were April Wright, Emilie P. Belanger, Brodie Schmidt, Emily Frasson, Cassandra Tuffnail, Emmanuela Jada and Jessica Dean. Jasmine Ing added two converts while Kendra Cousineau kicked one.

Brock’s try was scored by Tegan Teeple.

Next game for the Gryphs will be a semifinal match that they will host, likely on Oct. 12.
