Gryphon rugby women in OUA final and national tourney
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons will be competing in the U Sports national university women’s championship tournament at Wolfville, N.S., Nov. 1 to 4.
That was decided Saturday at Varsity Field when the Gryphs dumped the Brock Badgers 97-12 in OUA semifinal play.
It’ll be Guelph’s 11th consecutive appearance in the league final and they’re 7-3 in their previous 10 provincial championship matches including wins in the last two.
Two OUA teams gain berths in the U Sports championship tournament.
Saturday, the Gryphs held Brock scoreless after the 20th minute of the game while they scored 12 tries during that stretch to turn a 19-12 advantage into the final score.
The hosts were ahead 43-12 at halftime.
Emmanuela Jada scored three tries for the Gryphs while Talia Hoffman, Amara Hill and Taylor Durham had two apiece. Jasmine Ing scored a try and nine converts while Brodie Schmidt, Erika Barton, Alexandra Everett, Jacinta Addai-Sarfo and Cassandra Tuffnail collected one try apiece. Madison Brattan had two converts.
Niamh Haughey scored both tries for Brock while Meagan Hart had a convert.
The Queen’s Gaels defeated the McMaster Marauders 29-24 in the other semifinal to advance to next Saturday’s championship match.
Game time for the final has not been decided.
