Gryphon rugby women roll by Brock in semifinals
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons scored tries on their first two possessions as they rolled to a 58-0 victory over the Brock Badgers in OUA women’s rugby semifinal play Saturday on the U of G’s South Field (grass field).
Those two tries started the Gryphs on their way to a 38-0 lead at halftime.
Guelph Gryphons 58 Brock Badgers 0
Kendra Cousineau struck for three tries for the Gryphs while Lara Jorgensen and Maddie Hobson had two apiece. Single tries were added by Emily Clark, Kyla Warren and Abby Auger. Cousineau kicked four converts.
The Gryphs advance to the OUA championship match against the Queen’s Gaels in Kingston next Saturday.
Queen’s defeated the Western Mustangs 89-0 in Saturday’s other semifinal.
Queen’s finished the regular season in first place at 6-0 while the defending champion Gryphs were second at 5-1. The Gaels defeated the Gryphs 45-18 in league play Oct. 1 on the South Field.
The Gryphs have won the league title four times in the last six years as they won in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021. Queen’s won in 2019 and the global pandemic cancelled play in 2020.
A Guelph-Queen’s final is nothing new as it’ll be the fifth consecutive season the two teams have meet for OUA bragging rights. It’ll also be the 14th consecutive season the Gryphs have played in the league final. The last time they didn’t was in 2007 when they were bronze medalists and still went to the then CIS national championship tournament at Western where they again won bronze.
No matter the result of Saturday’s final, both the Gryphs and Gaels advance to the U Sports championship tournament in Victoria, B.C., Nov. 2 to 6.
