Gryphon rugby women seeded fourth for national tourney

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons have been seeded fourth for this week’s U Sports women’s rugby national championship tournament at Wolfville, N.S.

The OUA-champion Gryphons went 6-0 in league and playoff action this season and will be looking for their first national title since 2011 and their second overall as they also claimed the crown in the very first championship tournament in 1998.

The Gryphs will start this year’s tournament Thursday with a 3:30 p.m. game against the fifth-seeded Victoria Vikes, the Canada West finalists. The Vikes were 4-3 this season and have never won the national title.

The defending champion Ottawa Gee-Gees are the top seeds. They’re the Quebec conference champions who have won all nine league and playoff games they’ve played this year. Last year’s title win was their first.

The Atlantic-champion St. Francis Xavier X-Women are the second seeds. They’re 7-0 this season and their national championship win in 2016 was their fifth.

None of the other four teams in this year’s tournament have ever been national champions.

Third seeds are the Canada West-champion Calgary Dinos who went 7-1 this year.

The Laval Rouge et Or, the Quebec finalists, are sixth seeds. They’re 7-2 this year.

Seventh seeds are the Queen’s Gaels who are the OUA finalists. They went 4-2 this year with both losses being to the Gryphons.

Acadia Axewomen are the eighth seeds. They’re the Atlantic finalists and hosts who were also 4-2 this year.

Other quarter-final games on the Acadia University campus Thursday pit Calgary against Laval at 10:30 a.m., StFX against Queen’s at 1 p.m. and Ottawa against Acadia at 6 p.m.

Thursday’s winners advance to Friday’s semifinals while Thursday’s losers are to play in Saturday’s consolation semifinals.

Sunday’s schedule consists of the consolation final (Saturday’s winners) at 10:30 a.m., bronze-medal match (Friday’s losers) at 1 p.m. and the gold-medal match (Friday’s winners) at 3:30 p.m.
