Gryphon rugby women to play for national bronze

OTTAWA – The Guelph Gryphons will be playing for bronze at the U Sports national university women’s rugby championship tournament Sunday.

The Gryphons were handed a 21-5 setback in the semifinals by the Laval Rouge et Or Friday at the University of Ottawa’s Matt Anthony Field.

Laval used strong defensive play to limit the Gryphs to a single try in the match.

The Rouge et Or jumped into a 14-0 lead by halftime on the strength of tries by Annabelle Parent and Marie-Laura Choquette while Anne-Charlotte Beaulieu converted both.

Laval completed its scoring with a team try in the 47th minute. Beaulieu kicked that convert, too.

On their first possession after that try, the Gryphs prevented it from being a shutout when Jasmine Ing scored a try.

The final 20 minutes of the game went scoreless as the teams took turns shutting each other down.

The Gryphs advance to the bronze-medal match against the host Ottawa Gee-Gees Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

The gold-medal game between Laval and the OUA champion Queen’s Gaels is to follow at 3:30 p.m.
