Gryphon rugby women topped by Queen’s in OUA final

KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons got off to a quick start, but they couldn’t hold off the top-ranked Queen’s Gaels in the OUA women’s rugby championship match Friday night at Nixon Field on the Queen’s Campus.

Queen’s scored a 29-24 victory over the defending champion Gryphs to avenge a loss to the Guelph side on the Queen’s field in last year’s league final.

The Gryphs had tries by Shoshauna Gauvin and Brianna Martey in the first 15 minutes Friday, but Queen’s responded with two tries of their own to take a 21-12 lead into the halftime break.

The Gaels added another try early in the second half before Signe Caswell and Imogen Barnard connected for tries for the Gryphs. Kendra Cousineau had two converts for the locals.

Maggie Banks had two tries for Queen’s while Maddie Donnelly and Maddy Kushner added one apiece. Lizzie Gibson booted three converts and a penalty convert.

The victory was the eighth consecutive win for the Gaels in OUA play this season. It was also their win by the smallest margin, the previous one being a 45-18 win over the Gryphs on the U of G campus Oct. 1.

Both teams advance to next week’s U Sports national championship tournament at Victoria, B.C.
