Gryphon rugby women trample York
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons celebrated Homecoming by trampling the York Lions in OUA women’s rugby play.
The Gryphs could seemingly do no wrong as they ran to a 121-0 victory at Varsity Field.
Julia Schell broke free on a long run for a try in the second minute to start the onslaught. As was the case in the opening try, many of the following tries came on long runs to the end zone.
The Gryphs led 64-0 at halftime.
Alexandra Everett led the way with six tries while Emmanuela Jada had three. Marissa Themeles and Rebecka Sundell were among the other scorers.
The Gryphs lead the Shiels Division at 3-0 while the McMaster Marauders and Queens Gaels are at 2-1. York follows at 1-2 and the Western Mustangs are at 0-4.
The Gryphs are to complete their regular season Saturday with a match against McMaster at Varsity Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
A win next weekend will secure first place in the division and a bye in the quarter-finals.
