Gryphon soccer men advance to league’s Final Four

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons grabbed a berth in OUA men’s soccer’s Final Four by dropping the Brock Badgers 3-0 in quarter-final play Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The Gryphs scored all three of their goals in the first half in a game they dominated.

Jace Kotsopoulos, the reigning U Sports player of the year who missed most of this season with a leg injury, opened the scoring just shy of 11 and a half minutes into the game.

Jonathon Amoo added the second goal just over 24 minutes later and Kotsopoulos completed the scoring with a minute and a half to go in the opening half.

Assist guru Alex Zis set up both of Kotsopoulos’s goals.

Goalkeeper Erik Hermanns made three saves to keep a clean sheet for the Gryphs.

Alexander May had three saves for Brock.

The goals for Kotsopoulos were his first of the season and the game was his third. He had suited up for the season opener Aug. 31 at York and for a game at home against the Algoma Thunderbirds Sept. 21. Kotsopoulos had hit double digits in goals in each of his four previous seasons and has scored a total of 53 goals in 55 regular-season games.

The Gryphs outshot Brock 11-5 Sunday with four of Brock’s shots coming in the second half as the locals were content to sit back a bit to preserve their lead.

Guelph finished second in the West Division at 8-2-4 while Brock was third at 6-5-3.

Sunday’s other quarter-finals saw the Carleton Ravens drop Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 5-2, York Lions down McMaster Marauders 4-1 and Toronto Varsity Blues surprise Ryerson Rams 3-1.

Sunday’s winners advance to the Final Four tournament that’s to be hosted by York Friday and Saturday.

Friday’s semifinals will have the Gryphs play Carleton and York battle Toronto. Game times have to be determined.
