Gryphon soccer men also battle to tie with McMaster
GUELPH – Like their women counterparts in the first game of Friday night’s OUA soccer doubleheader at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, the Guelph Gryphons and McMaster Marauders battled to a 1-1 deadlock in men’s league play.
Both teams scored late in the second half for the draw.
Yordan Stoyanov opened the scoring for McMaster on an unassisted effort in the 74th minute.
Guelph 2nd 78:59 Jonathon Amoo pulled Guelph even, with help from Evan Dick, in the 79th minute.
The Gryphs outshot the Marauders 10-4 overall and 7-4 on shots that reached the net.
Erik Hermanns had three saves to get the tie for Guelph while Tristan Joyce had six saves to get the tie for McMaster.
The tie locks up a second-place finish in the West Division for the Gryphs. They’re at 7-2-4 with a game to go in their regular season while the York Lions have clinched first and are at 10-0-3.
McMaster is fifth at 4-3-6.
The Gryphs are to finish their regular season Sunday with a game against the Waterloo Warriors (2-6-4) at Waterloo’s Warrior Field. Game time is 4:15 p.m.
By finishing second in the division, the Gryphs will get a bye into the league’s quarter-finals which will be set for Oct. 27.
