Gryphon soccer men also drop close match with Western
LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons also suffered their first defeat of the OUA men’s soccer season with a 1-0 loss to the Western Mustangs Sunday at Western’s Mustang Field.
Anthony Chrysanthou scored the lone goal of the game with less than 15 minutes to go. Josh Rowland set up the goal.
Western outshot the Gryphs 8-4 and 5-1 on shots that reached the net.
Kody Thomson had the clean sheet for the Mustangs while Erik Hermanns was in net for the Gryphs who failed to take advantage of eight corner kicks. The Mustangs had one.
The match was also a physical one with Western committing 11 of the 20 fouls called in the game.
The York Lions, the West Division’s lone unbeaten team, lead the division at 4-0-1 while the Gryphs are second at 3-1-2 and Western is third at 3-3-0.
The Gryphs are to host the Algoma Thunderbirds (0-5-1) Saturday at 3:15 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
The Thunderbirds are to enter the match on a 26-game winless streak. They haven’t won since beating Western 2-1 Oct. 8, 2017, at Sault Ste. Marie.
