
Gryphon soccer men blank division-leading Western
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons scored a pair of second-half goals to cement a 3-0 victory over the Western Mustangs in OUA men’s soccer play Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
The Gryphon women suffered a 2-1 loss to Western in the first game of the usual Friday night doubleheader.
Men
Peyton Ferdinand hit for the eventual game-winner in the 36th minute with help from Jackson Sears.
Damian Truong added Guelph’s second goal in the 56th minute while Parmpreet Johal assisted on the play.
Sears added the game’s final goal in the 93rd minute.
The Gryphs outshot the Mustangs 10-9 including an 8-2 margin in shots on net.
Western leads the OUA West at 5-2-2 while the York Lions (5-0-1) and McMaster Marauders (5-2-1) are tied for second. The Gryphs and Brock Badgers are tied for fourth with identical 4-1-3 records.
The Gryphs are to battle the Waterloo Warriors (2-4-1) at Waterloo Sunday at 4:15 p.m.
Women
Olivia Brown opened the scoring for the Gryphs in the 18th minute with help from Christina Gomes.
Western tied it just over three minutes later with Hannah Vickers getting the goal.
Gabby Kohout scored the winner for the Mustangs in the 62nd minute.
The Mustangs carried the majority of the play, outshooting the Gryphs 17-3 including taking all 10 shots taken in the second half. Western led Guelph 8-2 on shots on net.
Both teams had two corner kicks while the Gryphs were called for 10 fouls in the game, eight more than Western.
Western leads the OUA West at 7-1-1 while the Gryphs are second at 5-2-1.
The Gryphs are to play the Waterloo Warriors (0-6-1) at Waterloo Sunday. Game time is 2 p.m.
