Gryphon soccer men clinch second in the West
LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons secured a bye in the opening round of the OUA men’s soccer league’s playoffs with a 1-0 win over the Western Mustangs Friday night at Mustang Field.
Connor O’Callaghan’s goal with just over three minutes to go in the game gave the Gryphs the win. Jace Kotsopoulos set up the goal.
Erik Hermanns made three saves for the win in the Guelph net while his teammates helped him out with a save on a shot that got by him.
Western outshot the Gryphs 8-4 and 4-2 on shots that reached the net.
The win lifts the Gryphs to 10-3-2 and clinches a second-place finish in the West Division behind the York Lions (12-0-3). Western is tied for third at 7-4-4.
The Gryphs are to close out their regular season Sunday with a game against the Windsor Lancers () at Windsor at 3:15 p.m.
The Gryphs will get a bye in the West quarter-finals and are to host a divisional semifinal on the Oct. 27-28 weekend.
