Gryphon soccer men drop Laurier Golden Hawks
WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons hit for their opening goal in the sixth minute of the game on their way to a 3-1 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA men’s soccer league play Wednesday at University Stadium.
Guelph scored twice in the first half and added its other goal late in the second half before Laurier ruined the shutout bid with a goal in the final five minutes of the match.
The Gryphs dominated play, taking 14 shots to eight by Laurier. Of that total, nine of Guelph’s shots reached the net while Laurier had four on goal.
Youssef Zaghloul tallied twice to give him three goals in as many games while Luke Rankin also scored. Alex Zis set up two of the goals to raise his total to six assists in the young season. Jack Sears also had a helper.
Bryan Lourenco collected the goal for Laurier with as assist going to Antonio Hecimovic.
Erik Hermanns picked up the win in the Guelph net while Jefferey Omoregie-Sanni took the loss.
The Gryphs improve to 2-0-1 with the win while Laurier falls to 0-2-0.
The Gryphs are to battle the Brock Badgers (1-0-1) Friday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Game time is 8:15 p.m.
