Gryphon soccer men drop Windsor with Lefebvre’s goals

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons both of their goals in the second half as they slipped by the Windsor Lancers 2-0 in OUA men’s soccer play Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Mitch Lefebvre scored both goals in the final 30 minutes of the match. His first, assisted by the OUA’s top set-up man Alex Zis, was netted in the 61st minute while the other one came in the 78th minute.

Erik Hermanns and Darlington Murasiranwa shared the shutout with Hermanns playing the first half and Murasiranwa playing the second. Murasiranwa stopped the only Windsor shot on the Gryphon net.

Both teams took seven shots with three Guelph shots getting to the Windsor net guarded by Kaneen Fells.

The Gryphs are tied for first in the West Division with the York Lions. However, the Gryphs are at 7-1-3 and have played one more game than York (7-0-3). The Western Mustangs (5-5-2) are third and are followed by Windsor (4-3-4), Brock Badgers (4-3-3), McMaster Marauders (3-3-4) and Waterloo Warriors (2-5-4).

Top six qualify for the playoffs and the Gryphs have already secured a spot in postseason play. They will finish fifth or better. Top two get first-round byes.

The Gryphs are to tangle with Brock at St. Catharines Friday at 3:15 p.m.
