
Gryphon soccer men eliminate Brock in shootout
GUELPH – The defending champion Guelph Gryphons needed a shootout to get by the Brock Badgers in the opening round of the OUA men’s soccer league’s playoff Wednesday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
The Gryphs scored on all five of their shots in the shootout while Brock scored four times.

Jackson Sears connected on the fifth shot for Guelph for the win after Brock’s Luca Ragagnin failed to score on Gryphon keeper Leighton Jull with the fifth shot for the Badgers.
Gray Yates, Juliano Campedelli, Colin Gander and Owen McKee had scored earlier in the shootout for the Gryphs while Brock had received goals from Michael Fernandez, Michael Solomon, Tiago Pereira and Luca Danesi.
The Gryphs had fallen behind early when Marc Iantomasi scored for Brock in the ninth minute.
Leo Shrimpton tallied for the Gryphs eight minutes into the second half.
The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time, forcing two 15-minute extra time periods.
John Greenhough put the Gryphs ahead in the third minute of extra time while Solomon tied things for Brock with about three and a half minutes to go in extra time, about 45 seconds after the Gryphs went down a man when Jack Pensom picked up his second yellow card of the game which brought on the automatic red card.
The teams were each shown the yellow card three times.
Guelph outshot the Badgers 8-3 overall and 3-2 on shots on goal.
The Gryphs also took six of the 10 corner kicks awarded during the game while Brock was called for 14 fouls, one more than the locals.
It was the third meeting between the teams in two weeks. The Gryphs had won 1-0 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Oct. 14 and the teams had fought to a scoreless draw in St. Catharines Oct. 16.
The Gryphs move on to play the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton in the quarter-finals Saturday at 1 p.m.
The locals had a win and a tie with the Marauders during the regular season. The teams tied 1-1 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Sept. 9 in the home opener for the Gryphs while the Guelph side won 2-0 in Hamilton Sept. 11.
The Gryphs had finished the regular season in third place in the West Division at 6-1-5, two points behind second-place McMaster (8-3-1) and eight behind first-place York Lions (10-0-2). Brock was sixth at 4-3-5.
Penalty kicks were also needed in the division’s other first-round match Wednesday, the fifth-place Waterloo Warriors edged the fourth-place Western Mustangs 4-3 (5-4 in the shootout).
Waterloo is to play York in the quarter-finals.
In the East Division, the fourth-place Nipissing Lakers slipped by the fifth-place Toronto Varsity Blues 1-0 in first-round play Wednesday while the third-place Carleton Ravens blanked the sixth-place Queen’s Gaels 2-0.
Nipissing is to play the first-place Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in the league’s quarter-finals while Carleton is to play the second-place Toronto Metropolitan Bold.
As in the women’s playoffs, the semifinals will be crossover matches Nov. 2 with the winners advancing to the league final Nov. 5. That match is to be hosted by the highest seed of the two championship-game combatants.
