Gryphon soccer men finish regular season with win over Waterloo

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons wrapped up their OUA men’s soccer league’s regular season Sunday with a 3-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors at Warriors Field.

The Gryphs had already clinched a second-place finish in the league’s West Division and had only pride to play for Sunday.

The Gryphs struck for a pair of goals in the first half for the win while both teams scored a goal in the second half, Waterloo’s ruining the clean sheet bid by Guelph’s Erik Hermanns with three minutes to play.

Dylan Rennie, Jonathon Amoo and Ian Vidovich scored for the Gryphs while Alex Zis had a pair of assists. He finished as the OUA and U Sports assist champion with 16 on the season.

Hamza Sabeeh scored for Waterloo.

The Gryphs finish second in the division at 8-2-4, trailing only the York Lions who finished at 11-0-3.

The first- and second-place finishers in both the West and East Divisions get first-round byes in the playoffs and are to host quarter-final games Sunday.

The teams that finish third, fourth, fifth and sixth are to play in first-round matches Wednesday with the third- and fourth-placed teams hosting the games.

The Gryphs are to host a quarter-final playoff match Sunday at 3:15 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. They’ll play the highest-ranked opening-round survivor of the trio of the McMaster Marauders (5-3-6), Brock Badgers (6-5-3) and Western Mustangs (6-6-2).
