Gryphon soccer men hand Algoma a blanking
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons scored twice in the first four minutes of the game as they downed the Algoma Thunderbirds 4-0 in OUA men’s soccer play Saturday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
Youssef Zaghloul and Johnson Amoo scored 47 seconds apart to start the Gryphs on their way to the win. Jace Kotsopoulos assisted on both goals and he also scored one of his own as did Evan Dick. Toni Zlomislic also had an assist.
Erik Hermanns made one save for the shutout while his teammates took 12 shots and eight made it to the net guarded by Algoma’s Kevin Pickard.
The Gryphs outshot Algoma 12-1 and the hosts took all 10 corner kicks awarded in the game.
Guelph leads the West Division at 5-1-1 while Algoma is ninth at 0-5-0.
The two teams are to play again Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Game time is 2:15 p.m.
