Gryphon soccer men hit early to dump Laurier
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons struck for five goals in the first half on their way to their second consecutive 6-0 victory in OUA men’s soccer play Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
The Gryphs added their final goal in the second half as they blanked the Laurier Golden Hawks Friday night.
Alex Zis sparked the Gryphs as he finished with two goals and three assists. He leads the league with 12 assists and 18 points and is second in goals scored with six.
Guelph’s scoring included three goals in just less than 13 minutes midway through the first half. Youssef Zaghloul, Jack Sears, Evan Dick and Mandela Sharpe each scored once for the Gryphs while Sears and Mitch Lefebvre each had one assist.
Darlington Murasiranwa had two saves for the shutout for the Gryphs in the chippy game that saw the yellow card displayed seven times – three times to Guelph players.
The Gryphs outshot Laurier 11-4 overall and 8-2 on shots that reached the net.
The hosts also took the game’s only corner kick.
The win pushes the Gryphs to top spot in the West Division at 5-1-2. However, the runner-up York Lions (5-0-1) have two games in hand on the Gryphs. Laurier is eighth at 1-4-2.
The Gryphs and Lions are to battle Sunday at 3:15 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
