Gryphon soccer men in scoreless standoff with York

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons battled the York Lions to a scoreless draw in their OUA men’s soccer league’s regular-season opener Saturday at York’s Alumni Field.

The Gryphs entered the match unranked while York was ranked fourth in the country.

Erik Hermanns stopped the only shot that reached the Gryphon net for the shutout while Mike Argyrides had three saves to record the clean sheet for York.

The Gryphs outshot York 9-6 and also took five of the eight corner kicks awarded in the game, all five coming in the second half. York was called for eight fouls in the match, two more than Guelph.

Guelph is to host the Waterloo Warriors Sunday at 3:15 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. The Warriors and Brock Badgers also tied one on Saturday at Waterloo as they fought to a 2-2 stalemate.
