Gryphon soccer men nip Western with first-half goal

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons struck for the game’s only goal as they edged the Western Mustangs 1-0 in OUA men’s soccer play Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Alex Zis scored that goal in the 26th minute.

Erik Hermanns was credited with the clean sheet in the Gryphon net although he didn’t have any shots to stop.

The Gryphs managed five shots on net and four were stopped by Western netminder Kody Thomson.

Guelph took nine shots in all while Western took three.

The Gryphs lead the West Division at 6-1-3, but have played two more games than the runner-up York Lions (5-0-3). Western’s fifth at 4-5-2.

The Gryphs are to play the third-place Windsor Lancers (4-2-4) in the second game of Sunday’s Gryphon Soccer Day at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Game time is 3:15 p.m.
