Gryphon soccer men nipped by York Lions

GUELPH – The York Lions used a second-half goal to edge the Guelph Gryphons 1-0 in OUA men’s soccer league play Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Jorgo Nika tallied in the 58th minute for York.

Mike Ardyrides picked up the shutout with two saves in the York net while Ryan Collins had one save in the Guelph net.

The Gryphs took six shots in the game, twice as many as the Lions.

York also took six of the game’s 10 corner kicks.

The win keeps York as the league’s only undefeated team as the Lions sport a West Division-leading mark of 10-0-3 while the Gryphs are second at 9-3-1 and, like the Gryphon women, they’re assured of a home playoff game as they’ve clinched a spot in the West Division’s top four.

The win clinched a bye in the divisional quarter-finals for York.

The McMaster Marauders and Western Mustangs are tied for third with identical 6-3-4 records.

The Gryphs are to complete their regular season with road games against the Laurier Golden Hawks (1-9-4) at Waterloo’s University Stadium Sunday at 3:15 p.m., Western at Western’s Mustang Field Friday at 8:15 p.m. and Windsor Lancers (5-4-4) at Windsor’s Alumni Field Oct. 21 at 3:15 p.m.
