Gryphon soccer men slip by Western
GUELPH – Mitchell Lefebvre’s goal with a minute left in regulation time lifted the Guelph Gryphons to a 1-0 victory over the Western Mustangs in OUA men’s soccer league play Saturday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
Simon Norgrove made 10 saves in the Guelph net for the shutout.
Kody Thomson faced four shots in the Western net.
Western completed its regular season with the loss. The Mustangs finish fourth in the West Division at 7-5-4.
With one game to go, the Gryphs and McMaster Marauders are tied for second in the West with identical 11-3-1 records.
The Gryphs are to host the Windsor Lancers (5-8-2) Sunday at 3:15 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex while McMaster is to host the Algoma Thunderbirds (2-13-0) Sunday in Hamilton.
If Guelph and McMaster finish in a tie for second, the Marauders will win the tiebreaker due to winning both regular-season matches with the Gryphs.
The team that finishes second gets a bye in the first round of the playoffs along with the West’s first-place finisher, the York Lions (13-2-1). The third-place finisher would host a first-round playoff match Wednesday against either Windsor, Brock Badgers (6-8-1) or Laurier Golden Hawks (4-7-4). Brock and Laurier are to play Sunday afternoon at Waterloo’s University Stadium.
