Gryphon soccer men top Waterloo to clinch playoff berth

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons bounced back from last weekend’s setback to down the Waterloo Warriors 3-1 in OUA men’s soccer play Friday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The win clinches a playoff berth for the Gryphs who scored the only goal of the first half and added to their lead with a pair of goals in the first 17 minutes of the second half.

Waterloo’s David Chung scored in the final minute of the game to ruin the shutout bid by Ryan Collins of the Gryphs.

Johnson Amoo scored Guelph’s first goal and he set up the other two. Manveer Gill and Jace Kotsopoulos also scored while Atchu Siva also had an assist.

The Gryphs outshot Waterloo 8-3 including a 6-2 advantage in the second half. Guelph also took five of the game’s seven corner kicks.

The Gryphs lead the West Division at 9-2-1, but runner-up York Lions (7-0-3) have two games in hand. Waterloo is third at 6-5-2.

Top six in each division qualify for the playoffs with the top two getting byes in the divisional quarter-finals.

Next game for the Gryphs will be their final home game of the regular season as they’re to host York at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Friday at 8 p.m.

After that the Gryphs have three road games to go – Oct. 14 at Laurier, Oct. 19 at Western and Oct. 21 at Windsor.
