Gryphon soccer women and Western in scoreless standoff

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons have started this season the same way they started last season’s OUA women’s soccer championship-winning season.

Sunday, the Gryphs battled the Western Mustangs to a scoreless standoff.

Libby Brenneman recorded the 21st shutout of her time with the Gryphons, making one save during the game. Megan Girardi earned the clean sheet for Western and she also had a single save.

The Gryphs took one more shot per half than Western as the hosts had a 3-2 advantage in the first half and a 2-1 advantage in the second.

Both teams took one corner kick per half.

The tie gives the Gryphs a win and a tie following the league’s opening weekend, same as they had last season when they tied Windsor and defeated Western in away games on the opening weekend.

This weekend’s games that featured a win over Windsor Friday night were both played at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The Gryphs are to play the York Lions (1-1-0) Wednesday at York. Game time is 6 p.m.
