Gryphon soccer women best in the OUA West

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons clinched first place in the OUA women’s soccer league’s West Division and became the first team to beat the Western Mustangs in league play this season as they posted a 1-0 win Friday night at Western’s Mustang field.

The Gryphs also secured a bye in the first round of the playoffs and will host the league’s Final Four championship weekend if they win their divisional semifinal next weekend.

Jenna Holtz’s goal with less then five minutes to go in the first half was the lone goal of Friday’s match.

Libby Brenneman picked up the shutout, the ninth of her season and 28th of her five-year stint with the Gryphons.

The Gryphs outshot Laurier 8-3 and 5-2 on shots that reached the net.

Guelph leads the West Division at 11-1-3 while Western is second at 9-1-5.

The Gryphs are to complete their regular season Sunday with a game against the Windsor Lancers (2-7-6) at Windsor Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Gryphs will get a bye in the West quarter-finals and host a divisional semifinal on the Oct. 27-28 weekend.
