Gryphon soccer women blank Algoma Thunderbirds twice

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons completed their regular season in the OUA women’s soccer league with a pair of shutout victories over the Algoma Thunderbirds at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The Gryphs won 3-0 Friday night and 2-0 Saturday afternoon.

Friday, the Gryphs scored all three of their goals in the first half including a pair about two and a half minutes apart.

Olivia Brown scored two of the goals while Olivia Rizakos had the other goal. Brooke Morton had the lone assist of the game.

The Gryphs dominated, outshooting the Thunderbirds 21-1 including a 14-1 advantage in shots on target.

The hosts also took 11 of the game’s 15 corner kicks while Algoma had two fouls, one more than Guelph.

Sabrina Spano had the shutout while Makayla Townes was in net for Algoma.

Saturday, the Gryphs scored once in each half for the win with Rizakos getting both goals and Brown picking up an assist.

The Gryphs outshot the Thunderbirds 19-1 and 15-1 in shots on target.

Guelph took all nine corner kicks and both teams were called for five fouls.

Christina Alexander had the clean sheet in the Gryphon net while Megan Chandler was in goal for Algoma.

The Western Mustangs finish first in the West Division at 10-1-1 while the Gryphs and McMaster Marauders finish tied for second with identical 8-2-2 records. McMaster will get the tiebreaker thanks to a 4-0 win over the Gryphs Oct. 7. The Gryphs have three wins and a tie since then.

Algoma finishes ninth at 0-12-0.

The Gryphs are to host either the Brock Badgers or York Lions in a quarter-final playoff match Wednesday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
