Gryphon soccer women edge York to open season
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons made the most of their opportunities as they opened their OUA women’s soccer league’s regular season with a 2-1 win over the York Lions Saturday at York’s Alumni Field.
The Gryphs were outshot 13-5 on shots taken in the game and 5-3 on shots that reached the net. Guelph was also called for 15 of the 22 fouls whistled in the game including 10 of 13 called in the second half.
York also took all six corner kicks of the game.
However, the Gryphs never trailed.
Victoria Hinchliffe connected for the opening goal in the 16th minute with Sydney Johnson drawing an assist on the play.
Vanessa Santoriello pulled York even in the 65th minute.
Kate Knafelc hit for the game-winner for Guelph in the 80th minute.
The Gryphs are to host the Waterloo Warriors Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. The Warriors and the Brock Badgers were in a scoreless tie Saturday at Waterloo.
