Gryphon soccer women in standoff with York
GUELPH – All of the scoring was limited to the first half as the Guelph Gryphons and York Lions battled to a 2-2 standoff in OUA women’s soccer play Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
All the scoring in the game was actually finished by the 20-minute mark as the Gryphs and Lions fought scoreless throughout the final 70 minutes of the match.
Both teams also took turns leading as Vanessa Salvaggio put York ahead four and a half minutes into the match.
However, the Gryphs were in front by the 12-minute mark as Kate Knafelc and Sayan Ladhani scored about five and a half minutes apart for the hosts.
York pulled even as Kiyani Johnson completed the scoring six and a half minutes after the Gryphs had shot ahead.
Ladhani and Victoria Hinchliffe had assists for the Gryphs while Marissa Castellano and Farkhunda Muhtaj had assists for York.
The Lions outshot the Gryphs 9-4 in the match and 7-4 on shots that reached the nets guarded by Brooke Davidson of the Gryphs and Danitza Indacochea of York.
York also took seven of the nine corner kicks awarded in the match.
The Gryphs are second in the West Division at 6-1-2, trailing only the Western Mustangs (8-0-2). Western has clinched a berth in the playoffs while the Gryphs are a win away from securing their spot in the playoffs.
Top six in the division advance to the playoffs with the top two getting byes in the opening round.
York (2-1-4) is tied for fifth in the division with the McMaster Marauders (3-3-1).
The Gryphs have five games left in their regular season. They’re to play a pair of games at the Gryphon Soccer Complex this weekend as they’re to host Western Friday at 6 p.m. and the Windsor Lancers (1-7-2) Sunday at 1 p.m.
