Gryphon soccer women in tie with Western

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons and Western Mustangs battled to a 1-1 standoff in OUA women’s soccer play Friday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Venessa Mazur gave the Gryphs the early lead less than 10 minutes into the match. Alyssa Hodgson set up the goal.

Melanie Walters pulled Western even with less than four minutes to go in the match.

Western pressed in the second half when the Mustangs took nine of the 10 shots they had in the game. The Gryphs had four in the game with three coming in the first half. As far as shots that reached the goal, Western had six to three for the locals.

Santana Ferreira had the tie in goal for the Gryphs while Megan Girardi had the tie for Western.

The Mustangs lead the West Division at 8-0-3 while the Gryphs are second at 6-1-3.

The Gryphs are to host the Windsor Lancers (1-7-2) Sunday in the first game of the Gryphon Soccer Day doubleheader. Game time at the GSC is 1 p.m.
