Gryphon soccer women keep shutout streak alive with scoreless tie

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons kept their string of shutouts going in the OUA women’s soccer league, but they had to settle for a scoreless tie with the Brock Badgers Saturday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The shutout was the seventh in a row for the Gryphs and their ninth in 10 league games played this season. It was also their second scoreless tie of the campaign, both coming in home games.

For Libby Brenneman, the shutout was her sixth of the season and 25th in five seasons with the Gryphons.

Guelph dominated play in the game, but couldn’t get the ball into the net behind Brock keeper Marilena Spagnolo who recorded her third shutout of the season and 13th in three seasons with the Badgers.

Spagnolo made seven saves and Brenneman made two.

Guelph took 15 shots in the game while Brock took four.

The Gryphs also took eight of the nine corner kicks awarded in the match.

Guelph leads the West Division at 7-0-3 while the Western Mustangs (6-0-4) are second and McMaster Marauders (4-3-3) third. Brock (2-4-4) is seventh.

The Gryphs are to play McMaster at Hamilton’s Ron Joyce Stadium Sunday at 1 p.m.
