Gryphon soccer women, Laurier tied for tops in West

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons moved into a tie for first place in the OUA women’s soccer league’s West Division standings with a 1-0 victory over the Brock Badgers Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

That win combined with a 2-0 loss by the Laurier Golden Hawks to the Windsor Lancers leaves the Gryphs and Laurier tied for top spot in the West at 4-1-2 and they’re a point up on the Western Mustangs (4-2-1).

Sydney Johnson scored the lone goal of Friday’s game early in the second half. Sydney Vanderhoef set up the goal.

Brooke Davidson had the clean sheet while Isabelle Newkirk was in net for the Badgers.

The Gryphs dominated the match, outshooting Brock 16-2 and 9-1 on shots on target. The locals also took six corner kicks while Brock took one.

The Gryphs and Badgers are to meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. in St. Catharines at the Brock Alumni Field.

Guelph is to wrap up its regular season next week with a pair of games against Laurier. They’re to play Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex and Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. at Waterloo’s University Stadium.
