
Gryphon soccer women oust Windsor in extra time
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons worked overtime to gain their berth in the OUA women’s soccer league’s quarter-finals.
The Gryphs scored twice in extra time to edge the Windsor Lancers 2-1 in first-round playoff action Wednesday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The Gryphs and Lancers had battled scoreless through regulation time.
Guelph native Olivia Brown broke the scoreless standoff when she tallied for the Gryphs just shy of three minutes into the first 15-minute half of extra time.
Violet Hipkin extended the lead when she hit just short of the five-minute mark of the second half of extra time.
Kailyn Robertson connected for Windsor with 65 seconds to go in extra time.
The Gryphs outshot Windsor 9-3 in the match, 4-1 in extra time and 3-2 in shots on net.
Guelph also had six corner kicks to two for Windsor while each team was called for eight fouls.
It was the second meeting of the season between the teams as the Gryphs had finished their regular season with a 2-2 tie with the Lancers at the Gryphon Soccer Complex last Friday.
The Gryphs advance to play the York Lions in Toronto in the quarter-finals Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
The Guelph side had a win and a tie with the Lions during the regular season. The teams tied 3-3 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Sept. 23 and the Gryphs won 3-2 in Toronto two days later.
The Gryphs had finished the regular season in third place in the West Division at 6-2-4, two points behind second-place York (7-2-3) and six behind first-place Western Mustangs (9-2-1). Windsor was sixth at 4-3-5.
In the division’s other first-round match Wednesday, the fourth-place McMaster Marauders edged the fifth-place Brock Badgers 3-2.
McMaster is to play Western in the quarter-finals.
In the East Division, the fifth-place Nipissing Lakers slipped by the fourth-place Carleton Ravens 1-0 in first-round play Wednesday while the third-place Toronto Varsity Blues blanked the sixth-place Toronto Metropolitan Bold 2-0.
Nipissing is to play the first-place Queen’s Gaels in the league’s quarter-finals while Toronto is to play the second-place Ottawa Gee-Gees.
Semifinals will be crossover matches Nov. 2 with the winners advancing to the league final Nov. 5. That match is to be hosted by the highest seed of the two combatants.
