Gryphon soccer women roll to victory over Algoma

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered the opening goal of the game, but they weren’t about to be upset by the Algoma Thunderbirds in OUA women’s soccer play Saturday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The Gryphs responded to Helen Lyden’s goal eight minutes into the game with eight consecutive goals for an 8-1 victory.

Victoria Hinchliffe scored the first three goals of the onslaught, the first two coming two minutes apart, as the Gryphs jumped into a 3-1 lead by halftime.

Kaylin Twardowski, Sayan Ladhani, Venessa Mazur, Kate Knafelc and Olivia Lennon scored the second-half goals. Knafelc and Ladhani collected assists in the game.

Santana Ferreira picked up the win in the Guelph net while Alexis Trigiani-Kirkwood was in net for Algoma.

The Gryphs dominated the game, outshooting the Thunderbirds 10-1 and taking 10 of the 12 corner kicks in the match.

Guelph is second in the West Division at 5-1-1, trailing only the Western Mustangs (6-0-1). Algoma is ninth in the nine-team division at 1-6-0.

The game was the first of five consecutive home games for the Gryphs. Next they’re to host the Laurier Golden Hawks (1-3-1) Friday at 6 p.m.
