Gryphon soccer women slip by Badgers

GUELPH – Victoria Hinchliffe’s second-half goal lifted the Guelph Gryphons to a 2-1 victory over the Brock Badgers in OUA women’s soccer play Friday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Katya Tarasoff had opened the scoring for the hosts with the only goal of the first half.

Samantha Bayer pulled Brock even in the opening minute of the second half to set the stage for Hinchliffe’s winner.

Laura Marrelli and Jenna Holtz collected assists for the Gryphs while Erica D’Alesio had an assist for Brock.

Brooke Davidson picked up the win in net for Guelph while Marilena Spagnola was in net for Brock.

The Gryphons outshot the Badgers 6-2 in shots taken and 5-2 in shots that reached the net.

The locals also took seven of the eight corner kicks awarded in the game.

The Gryphs lead the West Division at 3-0-1, but second-place Western Mustangs (3-0-0) have a game in hand. Brock (0-1-2) is fifth.

The Gryphs are to play the Windsor Lancers (0-1-1) at Windsor next Friday at 6 p.m.
