Gryphon soccer women start fast to top Windsor

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons scored all of their goals in the first half as they blanked the Windsor Lancers 3-0 in OUA women’s soccer play Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Jacqueline Madogo potted the eventual game-winner just shy of the game’s 15-minute mark while Venessa Mazur added the other two goals four and a half minutes apart late in the half. Sydney Johnson and Kate Knafelc picked up assists for the hosts.

Brooke Davidson made one save for the clean sheet.

Lauren Gellner made six saves in the Windsor net.

The Gryphs outshot the Lancers 19-5 overall and 9-1 on shots that reached the net and they also took all six corner kicks awarded in the match.

The locals have secured a playoff berth and can finish no lower than fifth in the West Division. They are second in the division at 7-1-3 and trail the Western Mustangs (9-0-3). York Lions (5-1-4) are third, McMaster Marauders (5-4-1) fourth, Brock Badgers (4-3-3) fifth and Waterloo Warriors (3-3-5) sixth.

Top six qualify for the playoffs with the top two getting byes in the first round.

The Gryphs are to play Brock at St. Catharines Friday at 1 p.m.
