Gryphon softball women drop doubleheader to Western
LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons were swept by the Western Mustangs in Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fastpitch Association play Saturday at London’s Stronach Park.
Western took the doubleheader with 4-1 and 14-1 victories.
The Mustangs scored all their runs in the sixth inning of the opening game while the Gryphs responded with their lone run in the seventh. Western had four hits and picked up a walk in the sixth.
Guelph’s run came when Katelyn Walker doubled and scored on a single by Delaney Hall. Hannah Roesche also had a single in the seventh as those three hits were all of Guelph’s hits in the game.
Binkley was charged with the loss as she yielded nine hits and two walks in six innings. She also had one strikeout.
Western put an early end to the second game with nine runs in the fifth inning. The mercy rule is a 10-runs difference after five innings of play. The Mustangs had scored four runs in the second and one in the third while the Gryphs picked up their run in the third.
Shannon McDowell singled to open the third for the Gryphs. Roesch and Pearson also hit singles while the run came in when Walker grounded out to first.
Hudson hit a single in the third for Guelph’s only other hit.
Seifried, Roesch and Ewing shared the pitching chores for the Gryphs. They combined to give up 15 hits – a triple, two doubles and 12 singles. They also hit two batters and had one strikeout.
The losses drop Guelph’s record to 7-5 while Western improves to 9-1.
The Mustangs lead the West Division while the Laurier Golden Hawks are second at 8-2, Brock Badgers third at 7-3 and the Gryphs are fourth. McMaster Marauders are fifth at 5-5, Windsor Lancers sixth at 4-5 and Waterloo Warriors seventh at 1-9.
This year the league has been divided into two divisions. Top three in each division plus the two teams with the best records of the remaining squads qualify for the championship tournament at Ottawa Oct. 12 to 14.
The Gryphs are to complete their regular-season play next weekend. They’re to play Laurier in a doubleheader at Waterloo’s Hillside Park Saturday starting at noon and host the Waterloo Warriors in a doubleheader on the U of G campus Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
