Gryphon Ubene runs to Penn State men’s race win
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Mitch Ubene of the Guelph Gryphons captured the win and was one of three Gryphons in the top 10 Friday in the men’s race at Penn State University’s Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational cross-country race.
Ubene won the 8.4-kilometre race in 25:36.0 to finish 3.8 seconds ahead of runner-up Spencer Brown of Georgetown University.
Ben Bumgarner of the host school was third, 10.6 seconds behind Ubene.
John Perrier of the Gryphs was sixth in 25:50.5 and Kalum Delaney was eighth in 25:55.4.
The Gryphs fielded a team of 13 in the event.
Of the others, Alec Purnell was 23rd, Michael Mather 24th, Nicholas Bannon 26th, Gavin Hughes 27th, Josh Kellier 32nd, Kyle Madden 35th, Aaron Canfield 36th, Cameron Bates 37th, Adam Schmidt 40th and Jack Cooper 45th.
The Gryphs placed third in the team standings with 54 points. Top five finishers from each school scored the points for their team.
Penn State won at 36 and Georgetown was second at 40.
The Gryphs were also third in the women’s team standings with 75 points while Georgetown won at 25 with all five of its runners in the top eight. Penn State was second at 41.
Cameron Ormond was top Gryph in the individual standings as she was seventh in 21:23.0 in the six-kilometre race. Kathryn Munks of Penn State won in 20:42.3 while Madeline Perez of Georgetown was second in 20:53.4 and Alison Willingmyre of Penn State was third in 21:03.1.
Annika Ariano of the Gryphs was 19th in 21:50.0 and Kiana Gibson was 20th in 21:53.6.
Other Gryphon runners included Sadie-Jane Hickson 23rd, Sandra Guga 24th, Olivia Roussel 28th, Nina Whitford 31st, Dana Earhart 37th, Emma Hubbard 41st, Beatrix Maddocks 42nd and Keegan Gaunt 45th.
The meet was the first of the season for the Gryphons.
They’re scheduled to compete in Western’s Bill Salter Invitational Sept. 21 and host their Vic Matthews Invitational for the first time since 2015. That meet is set for Oct. 18.
