GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons put an end to their six-match losing streak in OUA men’s volleyball play as they swept the RMC Paladins 3-0 Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

It was Guelph’s first win since Jan. 13 and kept their playoff hopes alive.

The Gryphs won 25-20, 25-18, 25-21.

The hosts had a .244 kill percentage while RMC had a .094 kill percentage.

The Gryphs won all the categories as they had 35 kills, eight aces, six blocks, 34 assists and 27 digs. RMC had 29 kills, one ace, five blocks, 27 assists and 23 digs.

Jacob Schweyer had 13 kills, four aces, a block and three digs for the Gryphs while Arjun Selhi had 11 kills, an ace and three digs and Joshua Glasbergen and Jacob Bailey each had three kills, an ace and two blocks. Jack Richards had 28 assists and two digs, Andrew Penner had three assists, Andrew Song had two assists, Nathan Peters had an ace, Alexander Odle had a block and four digs and Daniel Pickett had 10 digs.

Joshua Wilkinson had 10 kills and two blocks for RMC while Jason Nadeau also had 10 kills and Niko Roumanis had the ace. Andrew Gallant had 26 assists and nine digs.

The Gryphs (9-10) are tied for eighth with the Western Mustangs (9-9) and Waterloo Warriors (9-10) while the Nipissing Lakers (10-8), Queen’s Gaels (10-9) and Toronto Metropolitan Bold (10-10) are tied for fifth.

Top eight qualify for the playoffs.

The Gryphs and Paladins (0-19) are to battle again Saturday at 8 p.m. at the GGAC. It’ll be the final match of the season for RMC.

The league’s tiebreaking formula will be needed to decide the final playoff rankings.

Western is to play Nipissing both Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. in North Bay while Waterloo is to host Queen’s Saturday at 6 p.m. and Toronto Metropolitan has completed its regular season.

The Gryphs make the playoffs with a win combined with two losses by Western and a loss by Waterloo.

It is also possible for a five-way tie for sixth with two of the tied teams missing the playoffs. That scenario would play out if Western and Nipissing split their matches and Guelph and Waterloo win their matches. It also plays out if Western takes two from Nipissing and Guelph and Waterloo win their matches.

It’s also possible for a three-way tie for eighth with two teams missing out on postseason play. That scenario plays out if the Gryphs are beaten by RMC, Western drops two to Nipissing and Waterloo’s beaten by Queen’s.

Looking at the Gryphon results against teams with which they could be tied, they beat Western twice, split a pair of matches with Nipissing, dropped two matches to both Waterloo and Toronto Metropolitan and didn’t play Queen’s.

The playoff situation won’t be clear until Sunday’s Western-Nipissing match is complete.
