Gryphon volleyball men climb atop West Division standings
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons grabbed sole possession of top spot in the OUA men’s volleyball league’s West Division standings by sweeping the York Lions 3-0 at York’s Tait Mckenzie Centre Sunday.
The Gryphs eked out a 28-26 win in the first set before having easier times with the other two sets as they triumphed 25-15 and 25-17.
The Gryphs had a .219 kill percentage in the match with 33 kills, nine aces, 29 digs, two solo blocks and 12 assisted blocks.
York had a .139 kill percentage with 26 kills, two aces, 18 digs, seven solo blocks and no assisted blocks.
Leading the Gryphs were Zarko Ubiparip with 11 kills, Gideon Dresser with 21 assists, Jakson Paterson, Oliver Hissink, Ubiparip and Matthew Baxter with two aces apiece, Ben Kissack with nine digs, Hissink and Noah Romero-Marshall each with one solo block and Paterson with five assisted blocks.
Andrew Shotbolt had eight kills for York while Dan Everton had nine assists, Shotbolt and Grant Lynch each had an ace, Andrew Tauhid and Everton each had four digs and Lynch had four solo blocks.
The Gryphs lead the West at 8-3, but have played three more games than the runner-up McMaster Marauders who are at 7-1. Windsor Lancers are third at 6-4 and have a game in hand on Guelph.
The Gryphs are to battle McMaster Jan. 25 at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.
