Gryphon volleyball men downed by Cal State Northridge

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Guelph Gryphons were handed a 3-1 setback by the California State Northridge (CSUN) Matadors in university men’s exhibition volleyball play Thursday at CSUN’s The Matadome.

CSUN won 25-23, 28-30, 25-20, 25-20.

The hosts had a .213 hitting percentage in the match while the Gryphs hit .126. The Guelph squad had 43 kills (six fewer than CSUN), 27 errors (six more than CSUN), 40 assists (three fewer than CSUN) and six aces (one less than CSUN). Both teams had 12 blocks.

Oliver Hissink had 12 kills for the Gryphs. No other individual Gryphon stats were available.

Steven Rotter had 16 kills and three blocks for the Matadors while Maciej Ptaszynski had 13 kills, an ace and three blocks. Daniel Wetter had eight kills, three aces and six blocks while Luke Krzmarzick had seven kills, two aces and two blocks.

The match was the first of the season for CSUN while the Gryphs are 11-9 overall.

The two teams are to meet again Friday night at The Matadome.

The Gryphs (6-3 in league play) are to return to OUA action Jan. 11 against the Nipissing Lakers (5-3) at North Bay. Game time is 3 p.m.
