Gryphon volleyball men drop preseason match to Lakers

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered a 3-1 loss to the Nipissing Lakers in OUA men’s volleyball preseason play Thursday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

The game was the first for the Gryphons since their loss in the OUA bronze-medal match at Hamilton March 7, 2020.

Thursday, Nipissing took the opening game 25-21 before the Gryphs rebounded for a 25-20 win in the second game. The Lakers responded with a 25-23 victory in the third game and finished the match with a 25-15 win in the fourth game.

Being a preseason match, both teams used plenty of players as 16 Gryphons saw game play and Nipissing had 13 get in the action.

For the Gryphs, Jonathan Pickett had 12 kills and three digs while Nicolas Gumienik had six kills and an ace. Jack Richards had a block and 10 assists while Alexander Odle had three kills and an ace and Cody Mitchell also had an ace. Arjun Selhi had a block and Gideon Dresser had 18 assists and Ben Kissack had two. Andrew Song had three digs and Braeden Sears had two.

For Nipissing, Liam Ludlow had 12 kills, two blocks and six digs while Zach Thibeault had seven kills and two aces and Jackson Young had seven kills and three aces. Tom Wrigley had two blocks and three digs, Josh Nicholson and Eric Ellison each had 16 assists and Mason Blais had seven digs.

The Gryphs have three more preseason matches on their schedule as they’re to play the Ryerson Rams in Toronto Oct. 22, host the Waterloo Warriors Oct. 24 and play the Warriors at Waterloo Oct. 30.

The Gryphs are to begin their regular season Nov. 6 with a match against the Brock Badgers at St. Catharines. Home opener against the McMaster Marauders is set for Nov. 12.

With the regular season being strictly a divisional affair, the Gryphs are to play Waterloo twice and the rest of their West Division rivals (Brock, McMaster, Western Mustangs, Windsor Lancers) three times apiece for a 14-match regular season.
