Gryphon volleyball men earn right to host playoff match
KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons assured themselves of a home game in the OUA men’s volleyball quarter-finals with a 3-1 victory over the RMC Paladins Friday night.
The win clinched a second-place finish in the West Division for the Gryphs. In the quarter-finals, the Gryphs will host whoever finishes third in the East Division.
The Gryphs defeated RMC 25-20, 21-25, 25-14, 25-15.
Guelph had a .292 kill percentage with 41 kills, 30 assists, eight aces, 29 digs and nine blocks. RMC had a .130 kill percentage with 26 kills, 23 assists, six aces, 38 digs and four blocks.
Jonathan Pickett had 12 kills for the Gryphs while Gideon Dresser had 18 assists and Ben Kissack had 11 digs. Jakson Paterson, Dresser and Zarko Ubiparip each had two aces and Paterson, Dresser, Oliver Hissink and Ubiparip each had two blocks.
Michael Rowsell had 10 kills and two aces for RMC while Jonathan Barton had 14 assists, Jason Nadeau had 10 digs and Justin Benoit had two blocks.
The win leaves the Gryphs second in the West Division at 10-5. McMaster Marauders lead at 14-1 while Windsor Lancers are third at 8-7, Western Mustangs are fourth at 7-8, Brock Badgers are fifth at 6-9 and Waterloo Warriors are sixth at 3-11.
Top four teams in each division qualify for the playoffs.
The Gryphs have two games to go in their regular season. They’re to play the Queen’s Gaels (12-4) at Kingston Saturday night and the Warriors at Waterloo Feb. 22.
