Gryphon volleyball men edged by Windsor

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons just couldn’t put the Windsor Lancers away.

As a result, the Lancers edged the Gryphs 3-2 in OUA men’s volleyball play Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

Windsor won 21-25, 25-20, 26-24, 23-25, 15-12.

The Gryphs led in each set that they dropped. They were up 17-14 in the second set, 23-18 in the third set and 2-1 in the fifth set.

The hosts had 66 kills, seven aces, nine blocks and 63 assists while Windsor had 59 kills, two aces, 10 blocks and 58 assists.

Zach Newman had 22 kills, 10 digs and a block for the Gryphs while Josh Green had 14 kills, eight digs, five blocks, two aces and an assist. Jackson Paterson had nine kills, two digs, and ace and a block while Matthew Baxter had eight kills, five digs, an ace and a block. Of the others, Sam Kloke had three aces, 56 assists and 10 digs while Kaj Wigston had five assists and six digs.

For Windsor, Brad Gyemi had 30 kills, an ace, three blocks and six digs while Pierce Johnson followed with 22 kills, an ace, a block and 10 digs. John Moate had three kills, six blocks and an assist while Adam Child had four kills, 13 digs, Nolan Langley had 57 assists and Matthew Pe Benito had 24 digs.

The win was the second in as many league outings for Windsor while the loss squared Guelph’s record at 1-1.

The Gryphs are to play the Brock Badgers at Brock’s Bob Davis Gymnasium Friday at 8 p.m. The match will be Brock’s season opener.
