Gryphon volleyball men fall to Pepperdine in exhibition match

MALIBU, Calif. – The Guelph Gryphons started their slate of exhibition men’s volleyball games in California with a 3-1 loss to the Pepperdine Wave Monday.

While the Gryphs are midway through their OUA season, the match was the first of Pepperdine’s season as the NCAA considers volleyball a spring sport.

The Wave have won the NCAA title five times, the fifth one coming in 2005, and Pepperdine is ranked seventh this season.

Monday, Pepperdine defeated the Gryphs 20-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-22.

Zarko Ubiparip had 14 kills, two blocks and two assists for the Gryphs while Matthew Baxter had nine kills, an ace and seven digs. Jakson Paterson had five kills and four blocks while Oliver Hissink had an ace, two blocks and four assists. Gideon Dresser had 31 assists, Ben Kissack had nine digs and Eric Wilson had six digs.

For Pepperdine, Scott Solan had 12 kills and an ace while Alex Gettinger had nine kills and four aces. Jacob Steele had seven kills and six digs while Noah Dyer had two aces, four blocks and an assist, Austin Wilmot had five blocks, J.T. had Martin four blocks, Rob Mullahey had 21 assists and six digs, Joe Karlous had 17 assists and Diego Perez had 15 digs.

The Guelph side is to play the California Santa Barbara Gauchos Tuesday and wrap up the tour with evening games Thursday and Friday against the California State Northridge Matadors.

The Gryphs (second in West at 6-3) are to return to OUA league play Jan. 11 with a 3 p.m. game against the Nipissing Lakers (tied for second in East at 5-3) at North Bay.
