Gryphon volleyball men finish their Californian matches

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Guelph Gryphons men’s volleyball squad completed its Californian tour Friday night with a 3-1 loss to the California State Northridge (CSUN) Matadors at The Matadome.

The hosts won 23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-18.

CSUN led all of the statistical categories in the game as the Matadors had a .275 hitting percentage, 47 kills, 44 assists, 10 aces and 13.5 blocks. The Gryphs had a .089 hitting percentage, 33 kills, 31 assists, three aces and 10 blocks.

The loss was the fourth in their four-game stay in California. They dropped three of them by 3-1 scores and the other 3-0.

The win was the second in as many matches this season for CSUN. The Matadors had also defeated the Gryphs 3-1 Thursday night.

Zarko Ubiparip had six kills and three blocks for the Gryphs in Friday’s game while Oliver Hissink had five kills, two aces and two assists. Gideon Dresser collected three blocks and 25 assists while Ben Kissack had two assists and seven digs, Nicolas Gumienik had four kills, Eric Wilson and George Busecan each had four digs, Arjun Selhi had three blocks and Matthew Baxter had an ace.

Steven Rotter had 17 kills and four aces for the Matadors while Maciej Ptaszynski had six kills, four aces, four assists and nine digs. Taylor Ittner added an ace, four blocks, 35 assists and six digs while Ryan DeWeese had nine kills, an assist and five digs, Paul Rzepniewski had seven blocks and Cole Chea had five blocks.

The loss drops the Gryphons to 11-10 overall.

The Gryphs, second in the OUA West at 6-3, to return to league play with a pair of road games on back-to-back days as they’re to play the Nipissing Lakers (5-3) at North Bay Jan. 11 and the York Lions (4-4) at Toronto Jan. 12. Game time both days is 3 p.m.
