Gryphon volleyball men handed first setback

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their first loss of the OUA men’s volleyball season Saturday when they were defeated 3-1 by the Western Mustangs at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs won the opening set 25-21, but Western rallied with 25-22, 25-20 and 25-18 wins to take the match.

Guelph jumped ahead early in the first set as the Gryphs jumped out to an 8-1 lead on their way to the win. The Gryphs never led in the second set, but did have the score knotted 20-20. The hosts scored the opening point of the third set, but never led after that, and they were up 5-4 in the fourth set and kept it close for a while before the Mustangs went on a 13-3 run to take control.

The Gryphs fall to 2-1 with the loss while Western improves to 3-1.

The Gryphs are to host the Windsor Lancers (4-1) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the GGAC.
